Adult Acne Isn’t One-Size-Fits-All: Your Skin Type Still Matters

Still dealing with acne as an adult and wondering why nothing seems to work for YOUR skin?

First, I want you to know something: adult acne is way more common than you probably realize.

Acne is not just a teenage issue.

And yet, so many women reach their 30s and beyond and think, Seriously? I'm still dealing with this?

I get it.

There's also a lot of confusion about what causes acne, how we should treat it, and what our skin actually needs when it's breaking out.

That's why I believe education is so powerful.

Sometimes we need a conversation, a better understanding of what's happening with your skin, and yes... maybe a little trial and error.

Because the first question shouldn't simply be:

“What acne product should I use?”

I want to know:

What type of skin are we working with?

Acne Can Happen to More Than One Skin Type

You can have acne AND oily skin.

You can have acne AND dry skin.

You can have acne AND sensitive skin.

You can have acne AND combination skin.

Those differences matter.

It is really important to understand your skin type so we can make sure your skin gets what it is asking for.

If your skin is producing excess oil, we need to think about what's contributing to that rather than simply trying to strip every drop of oil from your face.

If your skin is dry, it's asking us for something different.

If it's sensitive and reactive, I'm certainly not going to throw a bunch of aggressive products at it and hope for the best.

And if one part of your face is oily while another feels dry?

That's information too.

We need to talk about skin type before we select products.

That's exactly why I created different adult acne skincare recommendations for oily, dry, sensitive, and combination skin.

Can We Please Stop Trying to “Dry Out” Acne?

This one takes me back.

There was a time when acne skincare basically meant:

Clean it harder.

Scrub it.

Dry it out.

Put something on it that burns so you KNOW it's working.

That's old-school thinking.

And I absolutely participated in it.

I remember trying to get the burning acne medication into my acne because I thought that would somehow make it more effective.

OUCH.

We know better now.

Your goal shouldn't be to punish your skin into submission.

Overdoing harsh or irritating products can disrupt your skin barrier and leave you with a whole new set of problems.

Healthy skin still needs hydration and barrier support, even when it's acne-prone.

Oily + Acne-Prone Skin

Oily skin doesn't mean we need to remove every trace of oil.

For oily, acne-prone skin, I like starting with F38 Purifying Cleansing Gel.

From there, I may incorporate F85 Acne SOS Face Drops, F06 Cell Active Serum, and F05 Anti Oxidant Face Cream.

Depending on the person, I may also carefully rotate F81 AHA + Hydroxytyrosol Serum into the routine.

And yes...

Oily skin still gets moisturizer.

Oil and hydration are not the same thing.

We're trying to create balance, not strip the skin.

Dry + Acne-Prone Skin

Yes, you can absolutely have acne and dry skin at the same time.

And this is where I become particularly careful about treating acne too aggressively.

I have changing skin myself and sometimes develop patches of dryness that need to be treated differently.

Female skin changes.

Hormones change.

Our needs change.

There's a learning curve to all of it.

I've learned that we have to pay attention to what our skin is telling us and have a little grace with ourselves along the way.

Be kind to yourself and the beauty of the ever-changing female body. Those hormones have given you many beautiful things, too.

For dry, acne-prone skin, I may incorporate F85 Acne SOS Face Drops, F06 Cell Active Serum, and F08 Cell Active Face Cream.

We can still address acne.

We just need to respect the fact that this skin is also asking us for moisture and support.

Sensitive + Acne-Prone Skin

If you're the person saying:

“My skin reacts to EVERYTHING. I'm scared to try anything new.”

I hear you.

This is not the time for me to hand you six new products and tell you to start everything tonight.

For sensitive skin, I prefer a slow introduction, one product at a time, so that if your skin does react, we have a much better chance of identifying what caused it.

One option I use is a routine built around the LA DOPE collection, including 009 Deep Cleanser, 002 Finer Pore DOPE Face Elixir, and 003 DOPE Your Glow Face Cream.

From there, we can carefully introduce F85 Acne SOS Face Drops and evaluate how your skin responds.

Slow is okay.

We aren't racing your skin.

Combination + Acne-Prone Skin

Oily here.

Dry there.

And somehow there's a breakout right in the middle of all of it.

Welcome to combination skin.

This is exactly why I don't believe every square inch of your face necessarily needs to be treated exactly the same way.

Some areas may need more attention to congestion and excess oil while others need hydration and barrier support.

We can build around that.

The more information you can give me about how your skin behaves, the better I can help you determine what it may be asking for.

What If I'm Worried About Acne AND Wrinkles?

This was important to me when I created these recommendations.

Because I'm an aging woman too!

I want to look great, and I don't want to sacrifice the progress I've made because my skin changes or I experience a temporary acne flare.

I get it.

That's why I've built options that can allow someone already using F59 Hydroxytyrosol Corrective Serum to potentially continue using it while we're addressing acne.

Having two skin concerns doesn't necessarily mean choosing one and abandoning the other.

It is an option to address both.

We just need to plan it out, avoid piling everything onto the skin at once, and watch carefully to see how your skin responds.

This Is Why I Love Recovery Nights

One of the things you'll notice in my recommendations is that I deliberately build in recovery nights.

That's not because we forgot to treat your skin.

Your skin needs time to repair and recover.

I think of it as active rest for the skin barrier.

If you're thinking:

“But Steph, if using an active twice a week is good, wouldn't seven nights get me there faster?”

Nope.

It's a marathon, not a sprint.

We're playing a repair game here.

I would rather create an intentional rotation of active products and give the skin time to recover than keep piling on treatments because we're impatient for a result.

Healthy-looking skin is the goal, not simply doing the most steps possible.

Outside-In AND Inside-Out

This is where my functional wellness background really influences the way I look at skin.

I don't believe we should automatically look at acne as something happening only on the surface.

Acne is complex. Hormones, genetics, medications, stress, skincare and other factors can all play a role.

And I'm also interested in what's happening with the person as a whole.

What's happening with your nutrition?

Your stress?

Your sleep?

Your hormones?

Your lifestyle?

Your digestive health?

What products are you using?

Skin and whole-body wellness aren't completely separate conversations.

I think of this as a circular relationship.

Your skin is an organ and deserves thoughtful care from the outside, while the rest of the body needs nourishment and support from the inside.

That's what outside-in + inside-out means to me.

If You Know Me, You Know I Love I01

Across these adult acne recommendations, I also recommend I01 ORAC + Camu Camu Olive Leaf Concentrate as an inside-out wellness component.

I01 is one of my absolute favorite Olive Tree People products.

And when I say favorite, I mean it.

Everyone in my house takes it... right down to my dogs.

If I could only have ONE product from Olive Tree People, it would be I01.

I use it as part of my broader wellness approach because of its antioxidant and nutritional support. I like having an internal component alongside the products we're using topically rather than pretending everything about skin health begins and ends with what comes out of a skincare bottle.

For my sensitive-skin recommendation, I may also incorporate LA DOPE 005 Internal Elixir as another inside-out wellness option.

Internal wellness products aren't acne medications, and they're not substitutes for appropriate medical treatment. They're one piece of the bigger wellness picture.

Give Your Skin Four Weeks

Another thing I tell people:

Trust the process and give it time.

I generally want to give a new routine about four weeks before we start making judgments about where we're headed, assuming your skin is tolerating the products well.

And ALWAYS take pictures.

Seriously.

Before you start:

Natural light.

No filter.

No makeup.

Front.

Both sides.

Then put the magnifying mirror away.

Looking at your face every morning searching for microscopic evidence of improvement will make you crazy.

Take the photos.

Follow the routine.

Trust the process and give it time.

Then let's compare.

What Happens If You Message Me “ACNE”?

I'm not going to immediately send you a link to an acne product.

The first thing I'm going to ask is:

Tell me about your skin type.

At minimum, I need to know whether we're dealing with oily, dry, sensitive, or combination skin.

But the more information you give me, the better.

Tell me what's happening.

Tell me what you're currently using.

Tell me what you've tried.

Tell me what makes your skin angry.

Tell me what other skin goals matter to you.

And if we need more than a few DMs?

I'm willing to hop on a Zoom with you.

We can really get into the details, talk through your concerns, and determine which recommendations make the most sense for you.

Because I don't want to simply sell you an acne product.

I want to help you understand your skin.

And Sometimes We Need a Dermatologist

There is also a point where skincare recommendations aren't enough.

Deep or painful acne, cystic lesions, significant scarring, sudden or severe acne, signs of infection, or acne that isn't responding appropriately deserve a conversation with a dermatologist or another qualified healthcare professional.

There is absolutely room for skincare, wellness support AND medical care.

They don't have to compete with one another.

If You're Still Dealing With Adult Acne...

I want you to know that you aren't alone, and this is far more common than you think.

We can talk through what's happening, learn what your skin is asking for, and create a thoughtful plan for healthier-looking skin.

Maybe you're oily.

Maybe you're dry.

Maybe you're sensitive.

Maybe you're all three depending on what day of the week it is!

That's okay.

Your skin is allowed to change.

Our job is to pay attention and respond accordingly.

Ready to figure out where to start?

Send me “ACNE” + OILY, DRY, SENSITIVE, or COMBINATION.

And if you're not even sure which one you are?

Just send me “ACNE.”

We'll figure it out together.
